Did you know that this week was ‘National Gardening Week’? It was launched four years ago by the RHS and since then has grown into the country’s biggest celebration of gardening. From a weather and a planning point of view, it couldn’t have taken place during a better week either – unless you unfortunately live in one of the few areas in the UK that hasn’t enjoyed summer temperatures this week!
So, as it was (kind of) in the news, this morning I decided to spend some time doing a little research on eBay into the ‘gardening niche’. As you know I’m researching different products and niches all the time so now seemed the perfect moment to see whether any interesting new products have popped up on the scene, and this time I thought I’d share a selection of my findings with you.
First of all though let me briefly explain what I mean by the ‘gardening niche’. Gardening is something that huge numbers of people enjoy and therefore has massive online selling potential. There are also many, many smaller areas or sub-niches within the main gardening niche so plenty to investigate further. For example, let’s imagine that you really enjoy gardening – you are good at growing plants, knowledgeable about different flowers, shrubs and trees and your friends know that if they need any kind of gardening advice, you’re the one to call!
In this case, you could consider researching and selling in a specific sub-niche within ‘gardening’ and that might be ‘Plants / Seeds / Bulbs’. Or, perhaps you regularly use a particular tool that makes all your gardening tasks so much easier. In this case you could consider researching and selling in the ‘Hand Tools & Equipment’ sub-niche.
Or maybe you are particularly creative with an eye for design and have great ideas for displays of flowers. You could use this knowledge to sell within the ‘Pots / Window Boxes / Baskets’ sub-niche.
Remember though that whichever area you may be knowledgeable in, it’s important that you uncover what’s selling and then combine your skills and knowledge with the proper research of relevant products to enable you to decide exactly what to sell within your chosen sub-niche.
So, back to my findings. What’s up and coming in the gardening niche right now? Avoiding the obvious – garden furniture, sun shades, even paddling pools due to the warm weather, I’ve chosen two sub-niches as examples to give you some research facts and figures and to get you thinking about potential products that you could research further if this is a niche that interests you.
First up, the ‘Barbecuing & Outdoor Heating’ sub-niche
More than 64 people per day are viewing a ‘Table Top Portable Gas Barbeque’ from just one seller, and sales are averaging around 6 per day at £23.99. Table top barbecues are the perfect solution for those with small outdoor spaces and of course for camping trips and picnics.
On the same theme, barbecue covers (this time for full size barbecues) are currently selling like hot cakes – or I should say ‘hot covers!’. One seller on eBay recently sold 34 in various sizes, in just one day, at a minimum of £17.99 each – and in fact I predicted these would be in demand as it’s a product I detailed in a recent Hot Product Report for The Source Report.
A ‘Charcoal Starter Kit’ (a cylindrical contraption that allows you to light your barbecue coals easily) is selling on average 5 per day at £10.99. Quirky, yet useful, this solves the problem of burnt fingers and hours trying to light your coals!
Next, the ‘Garden Lighting’ sub-niche
By digging deep into further sub and sub-sub niches I spotted a ‘Solar Powered Spiral Wind Spinner Light’ (very niche!) that is selling steadily – 2 or 3 per day with around 26 people viewing per day. Although at the less expensive end of the scale at £5.99 each, I noticed that many customers purchase more than one – this has the advantage of allowing you to combine postage costs and make a bigger profit.
‘Solar Powered Colour Changing Garden Ball Lights’ are also popular in this sub-niche. One seller I researched was selling these at a rate of 3 sets per hour at £9.99 per set. Everyone likes a pretty garden in the spring and summer, so now is the perfect time to research these further.
Or how about LED decking lights – specifically in blue! Warm white is popular too. By choosing to stock a specific colour you do risk narrowing your market – but this can be advantageous as you are also then targeting a very specific market – which results in less competition. Sets of 10 are selling at around £21.99. Several sellers are listing these currently and making sales of around 8 sets per day.
Finally, let’s look at the ‘Pots / Window Boxes / Baskets’ sub-niche from my earlier example
Topiary is on trend! And not just any old topiary – artificial topiary at that. From my research, ‘Artifical Topiary Hanging Flower Balls’ are very popular selling from around £8.99 (small ball) to £65.00 (large ball) on eBay. The top seller of these is regularly selling 8 of these per day in a variety of sizes.
Plastic plant pots in ‘colour pop’ colours (red, yellow, blue, green, pink etc) are easy to store, pack and post and brighten up any windowsill, indoors or out. This is another item that buyers will purchase in multiple quantities, again allowing you to save on your postage costs. On one single day this week, one eBay seller sold 18 pots (in various sizes) at a minimum cost each of £4.69.
And lastly, ‘Mini Galvanised Metal Pails’. These are cute little planters that can be used on patios, on garden furniture or on windowsills. One eBay seller of these gained 14 watchers in 24 hours recently and is selling at a rate of 11 packages per day, in packs of 1, 5 and 10 and in various sizes and colours from £5.00 up to £35.00 depending on size, colour and pack quantity.
So, there you have 9 products, gleaned from a couple of hours research on eBay, that are potentially worth you pursuing further – and so now it’s over to you because that’s your job! All of these products are increasing in sales daily and have huge sales potential over the coming months so your next step is to research the ones that interest you further and start narrowing down potential suppliers.
